Meri Pyaari Bindu

I generally do not write movie reviews, but no sooner than I finished watching this movie, this blog kind of wrote itself in my mind.

I don’t know why it took me so long to get to this movie. I knew already that it does not have a happy ending. And maybe I wasn’t ready to know that even movies, like life, can end unhappily sometimes. But today, on an impulse I started watching this movie and I got drawn into its magic.

Set mainly in the sleepy, lazy life of Kolkata (a city with its own love & magic), it is the story of a madly in love Abhimanyu and a crazy, impulsive, wild Bindu. Don’t worry. I am not going to write a summary of the movie here, you can find it anywhere on google. But I felt I should give some typical, movie review start to ease you into my write up.

I didn’t know what I was expecting from the movie. The first 5-10 mins had me really confused about where this story was going. Much like the city it is set it, it was slow, lazy and confusing. But once he began their story, the movie charmed its way into my heart, much like the city had a few years back.

The movie is like a slow poetry, Gulzar sahab’s shayari or a glass of whiskey – it takes time to set in and then warms you. You get drawn into the world of Abhimanyu Bubla Roy and Bindu Shankarnarayan. You know that the love story is going to end in a heartbreak but yet you sit around waiting for it to begin. You see the eons long platonic friendship turn into a full-fledged romance almost towards the end of the movie. You see their chaotic vibes, their scorching chemistry, their trust in each other’s talent, their push to make the other reach the best version of themselves. You see Abhimanyu yearn for her love & commitment for years, without having the courage to speak it out, his wanting to stay in the safety net of his job without wanting to take the jump and start writing, his shy persona, warmth, softness and vulnerability never change. You see Bindu & her rebellious wild side, her high ambitions and her soaring confidence in herself never breaking, her fight with real emotions, her hanging on to Abhimanyu like a safety net, unabashed & free – the complete opposite of Abhimanyu. And you see her calm, tamed, content, when she is releases herself from the safety net and decides to figure her life out.

Sometimes, no matter how much you chase love, you never quite catch up. Abhimanyu was never quite able to tame her wild side, got drawn into her craziness and followed through. She may or may not have found love as she decided to settle into her life as a wife, daughter-in-law & a mother; maybe she found the love she deserved in her daughter’s eyes, smile & hugs.

While they both did eventually move on, leaving their love story incomplete, they did lock up their memories in the old cassette, Abhimanyu’s manuscript and in a corner of their hearts.

Because not all love stories are meant to end happily. Some are destined to remain incomplete.
