Happiness
Happiness, I have come to realize, is grossly understated – both as a term and as a concept. On one hand we state pretty obviously that happiness is not that difficult, on the other, I highly doubt most of us know what being happy means. What does it take to be happy – money, big house, many cars, fame? Or does it just take the company of loved ones and a home above the head? It could be either or neither.
See, happiness is not a term that can be classified as good, bad, right or wrong. It is the most beautiful truth of life, provided, you understand it for yourself. But it must be clear that it is a basic need – just like air, food, water. That’s why I say it’s understated. Because people don’t seem to realize that one’s happiness is just as important for life. You could climb the career ladder, work really hard, and earn a lot of money with some effort. And it all could make you happy. Provided you know, that it is what is required for you to love yourself and be truly happy. It’s not in being happy that the effort lies, it’s in knowing what makes you happy.
I used to think that to be happy I need to give myself time, take time off work or studies to do that which will bring an involuntary smile to my face and give me a good night’s sleep. And to do that means worrying about others a little less, caring about their opinions lesser. And that is selfish and being selfish is wrong! Correct?
Wrong! In this day and age where people are getting replaced as fast as objects, it would be a boon to be the right amount of selfish. Because in your life, people will come and go, but you have to live with yourself. And years later, when your career is done, you have earned more money than what you will possibly need, you have a big house with barely people to share it with and many cars but no energy to use them, you might just regret on not having been a little selfish for yourself. Because, happiness is simple really – you just need to know and take care of yourself. And things will start falling into place, you will smile, relax and nothing else will matter.
